Moving Checklist (Paperwork)
By Jason Su · Updated October 15, 2026
A move is paperwork first and boxes second. Every address on file has to be changed, and some of them — insurance, vehicle registration, the bank — come with deadlines and fees if they are missed. This checklist puts the documents in the order they actually come up, so the important ones do not slip behind the furniture.
Rules differ by state, especially for a vehicle. Some states want a new registration within a short window, and the DMV notice is a common one to miss. Check your state’s rules rather than assuming they match the last one.

How to use it
- Do the urgent column first. The post office, the bank, and the insurance company are the ones that send money or statements, and the ones where an old address causes the most damage.
- Do not assume the DMV waits. Vehicle registration and license rules vary by state, and some windows are short. Check your state’s motor vehicle site the week you move.
- Update insurance before the boxes. A claim is only covered at the right address, and renters or homeowners insurance is tied to the property.
- File the new documents in the Document Inventory. A new lease, a new declarations page, and new utility numbers all belong in the same place the old ones lived.
- Update any plan that names your address. A will, a letter of instruction, or an emergency contact sheet that still lists the old home is only half useful.
Frequently asked
How long do I have to update my license and registration?
It depends on the state, and the window is shorter in some than others. Check your state’s motor vehicle site rather than guessing — the fee for a late registration is usually more than the form itself.
Do I need to change my address with every subscription?
Not every one, but the ones that bill you or hold personal data are worth it. A subscription still reaching the old address is a small leak of your information.
What is the one people most often forget?
The voter registration, followed by the doctor and pharmacy. Neither sends a bill, so neither reminds you.
Next step
Start with the post office and the bank, then do the vehicle and the insurance in the same afternoon. The rest can follow the checklist over the next two weeks.
